CRTA HISTORY
Founded in 1929 by Laura E. Settles, a retired schoolteacher in Pasadena, CalRTA's Core Purpose is: "To enhance and protect the benefits of retired educators." Tremendously dedicated, skilled volunteers serve at the state, area, and local level. We are the only organization that focuses entirely on retirees!
Additional local programs include our Scholarship Awards, the iLoveSchools.com grants for current teachers, and a quarterly newsletter "The Report Card." State CalRTA publishes "Contact," the official newsletter that highlights many issues effecting retired educators. For just $42 per year, CRTA membership must be the best deal ever.
LEGISLATION AFFECTS US ALL!
Tracking and influencing legislation is important. Our Legislative Advocate, David Walrath, is the major spokesperson for CalRTA members in Sacramento and Washington D.C. We know that our California Governor established a Pension Committee to "study" public employee benefit and many recent newspaper articles on public pensions resulted from positions adopted by the Governor and LA Mayor. CalRTA will continue to monitor the CA State Legislature and CalSTRS, protecting the pensions of our retirees.
At the federal level, CalRTA is seeking the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which penalize individuals and spouses who have their own retirement system funding, denying them earned Social Security. Write Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and President Obama to remind them we are due this earned Social Security retirement!
CalRTA now has a Political Action Committee (PAC) to which anyone can donate. CalRTA is non-partisan, strictly issues-oriented. CalRTA DOES NOT contribute to any politician's campaign. Funds will be used to fight ballot initiatives that will threaten CalSTRS pensions and public education in California. You may send non-deductable contributions to:
