            The background of Area VIII

Area VIII encompasses the northeastern portions of Los Angeles County and into the edge of San Bernardino County. We have five Divisions; Bady View (Division 61), Pasadena Foothill (Division 01), Pomona Valley (Division 13), San Gabriel Valley (Division 71), and Whittier (Division 31). Our Divisions are similar in structure but unique in their individuality.

Area VIII has a special place in the hearts of many members of the California Retired Teachers Association. It is the birthplace of the Association. Laura E. Settle and a handful of other retired teachers from the Pasadena and Los Angeles areas first organized CRTA in this part of the state back in 1929. Our Pasadena-Foothill chapter carries the designation of Division 01 in recognition of our beginnings.

We are proud of our past, but we want to focus on the present and the future. Our members are active and fully engaged in promoting the Association’s core mission of protecting teachers’ pensions and supporting public education. We have become very aware and involved in promoting legislation that protects our future. We also have made great strides towards defeating those measures that are detrimental. We are the only California State Organization whose main agenda is the protection of the pensions for 170,000 California retired educators.
Retired teachers are insatiable volunteers. You find them in schools, colleges, nursing homes, churches, and hospitals freely giving of their time for the good of others. In our area alone, this last year, we have donated over 130,727 volunteer hours with a value of over $2,000,000. All our Divisions are also offering Scholarships to student teachers as well as providing gifts and grants to teachers in the classroom.

If you are a retired educator; classroom teacher, principal, superintendent, college professor, or librarian and are not already a member of CRTA, I invite you to join us at a luncheon or other event. If you are a spouse or family member of an educator, or just believe in our core purpose, we would love to have you too. We want you to see for yourself the importance of working together to protect our hard-earned pensions and the pleasure of socializing with colleagues with similar interests. Come join us!
